With
cloud, showers and possible thunderstorms forcast, Whakatane driver
Christina Orr-West is expecting trouble amidst the BNT V8s when they
battle for valuable points in their final three races of the season at
the ITM 400 in Hamilton this weekend.
After six gruelling rounds of the season over, it all comes down to
this weekend for the nation's top motorsport category where they join
the Australian V8 Supercars at the temporary street circuit built in
the Hamilton suburb of Frankton.
Orr-West had her best round of the season on the concrete walled
circuit this time last year and once again is putting faith in the
unforgiving track to bring forth her best effort.
"I'm hoping for a good result there, we had one last year. I'm looking
to finally get my top 10 race finish but everybody has to behave
themselves for that though." siad Orr-West.
There will be much action over the weekend as Angus Fogg, Craig Baird
and John McIntyre battle over who will be the champion after the final
race on Sunday but naturally there will be other battles throughout the
pack as all drivers do all they can to improve their standing before
the season wraps up.
"The top guys will be pushing hard for points and with not much between
them they will be really going for it and with the V8 Supercar drivers
watching I think all hell is going to break loose."
"I'm looking forward to it but I'm not looking forward to the rain that
is being forcast. It's going to be hectic anyway with being the last
round of the season and everybody wants to end on a high. If it rains
it will be multiplied 10 fold so it will be a very interesting weekend
- you never know the rain may slow them down and be a bit of a blessing
in disguise." said Orr-West.
But with Orr-West looking for a solid result from Hamilton she will be
looking to avoid any signs of impending carnage and the last thing she
wants to take home from this prestigious event is a hunk of twisted
metal and kevlar.
"The plan is to have fun, finish and don't wreck the car at the end of
the season. I don't want to end with a wrecked car because it's just no
fun ending the season with a wrecked car." she says.
Apart from the sheer enjoyment of being a part of the country's largest
and most popular annual motorsport event, Orr-West knows she needs to
do well in front of the huge crowds and motor racing industry leaders
that will be attending the event in a professional capacity.
"It's not like I'm going for the championship title or anything but
it's another experience and another chance to get my name out there and
get a good result so we can look at getting some money for next season.
We will go out, get noticed and get our names out there."
The weekend’s action will begin for the BNT V8s with two free practice
sessions on Friday followed by 20 minutes of qualifying at 3:00pm and
the top ten shoot-out at 3:25pm. Race 1 will start at 12:23pm on
Saturday with Races 2 and 3 set to go at 9:20am and 1:40pm on Sunday.
The first two races will be over 12 laps with the championship finale
over 16 laps but unlike previous rounds the final race not be the full
reverse grid format.
The BNT V8s will be joined at the event by the ENZED V8 Ute Challenge
and of course the V8 Supercars where the event is expected to attract
over 100,000 race fans over the three days.
